I’m an associate professor in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawai’i Mānoa. My interests include second language writing, adolescent L2 literacy, and teacher education (both language teacher education and the preparation of mainstream/content teachers to work with second language learners). I am particularly motivated in my research by a concern with educational equity for resident second language learners–youth who have lived much of their lives in the United States but have not received appropriate opportunities to learn academic language and literacy in school.
I post conference presentations and links to publications on my personal website: https://sites.google.com/a/hawaii.edu/betsy-gilliland/
I am also interested in hearing from prospective PhD students, especially those interested in qualitative, ethnographic research into schooling for second language adolescents. More information on my department and application requirements is available here: http://www.hawaii.edu/sls/sls/
